A new chapter in the Table Tennis Diary

This is in continuation to my previous post on my passion and love for table tennis. I am in Cognizant now since 2 months. Initial one month was a bit hectic, I was in EUR shift and that is the shift where workload is maximum. Today is my last day of night shift which spanned over 2 weeks, it was less workload comparatively. I utilized my time in doing some project related learning.

There was a break in my gym’ing too due to change in shift and some back problem. I am good now, and gym is also back on track. I go to gym before office, and then I feel fresh and work through the night. Today was a very good day, not only did I have good stint at the gym, but also got to play table tennis first time in Cognizant.

It has been couple of months since I left Amdocs, and did not get a chance to play table tennis. I played today after the break. It was good, the table here is different compared to Amdocs. Also there are 2 tables here in the room compared to one in Amdocs. This table is slower as compared to Amdocs one, and I had to adjust my game a bit.

Surprisingly I did well today, 100% wins. Not bloating about it, my friend had a thin bat, and I found form soon. We also did some practice before the first game. I am trying to be humble here, because this is something very close to me, I really love playing table tennis. Winning or losing is not important, it is more important to play and enjoy! Looking forward to many more stints with the blue table…

Downfalls of Digital and the Internet Age

So it is 5AM in the morning. I am in night shift. Today is my second day of night shift in the new company. No this is not the downfall I will talk about; I am fine working in night. I accept it, what I want to talk about is the disconnect among ourselves, and among our friends and family which has come along with the addiction to social networking.

I am an avid facebook user since long time. I won’t say I am addicted to it, but I use it often. Technology like any other Science can be a boon as well as a blessing, depends on how you use it. Like you can use Nuclear power to generate electricity to power cities, you can also use the same nuclear energy to destroy cities. Same is with facebook, I use it for constructive purpose, to stay up to date with the latest in technology and also the happenings around the world. Also getting an update on friends, but one must remember to be in touch with friends on other mediums apart from facebook, and I imply digital mediums on a bigger scale.

I did not have WhatsApp till last year. I had a Bada OS mobile of samasung, and they did not have WhatsApp for it. I switched to Google Nexus 5, and started using WhatsApp, first couple months were those characterized by novelty of something new, I confess I used to ping a lot of friends and waste lot of time. Then I started using it only to stay in touch with close friends and family. Important thing is how much time you can afford to give to such things, and how much time you actually give. I do not spend more than half hour a day on WhatsApp.

Few more things I am proud of are living without a TV for over 3 years, and that too happily, living without a mobile for more than a month. I am in the business of IT, and I have passion for IT. However I am not addicted to it, I can live without it. I like the real world more, I enjoy the sunrise, I used to do that first thing in the morning in Magarpatta City apartment. I enjoy travelling, I enjoy partying with friends in real life. Yes there are a lot of downfalls of the digital age, but it is up to you on how much you can control yourself, and how much you can utilize the technology, rather than technology utilizing you!!!

IPL Knockouts & the Mumbaikar spirit

IPL has reached knockout stages now. Chennai, Mumbai, Rajasthan and Bangalore have made it to the last 4. Mumbai has done so against all odds. They had a very bad start to the season, and were placed at the bottom 2 of the table. There came a time when they were ruled out of the tournament, and they had to win last 7 or so matches and still have some luck to go with it to make it to top 4.

What eventually happened was they ended up at number two in the table, a tremendous achievement. Being a proud Mumbaikar, that is something I can easily relate it. My own life has been a bit like that, many times when no one was considering me, I came out shining. I have blogged about such examples before. Also, the saying that ‘When the going gets tough, the tough gets going’ implies to MI in this IPL season and to me too.

This has been the most competitive of all the 8 seasons. Top 4 were not decided till last day of group stages. Every team gave good performances, and fought hard in every match. Another highlight has been that the fielding standards are just getting better a better, this IPL we saw some outstanding and jaw dropping catches being taken, simply superb!

One more trend I noticed was captains winning the toss and electing to bowl first in majority of the matches, and also ending up wining majority of those matches. They have the confidence of chasing any total, 180 is easily gettable now compared to 5 years back, when it was a winning total for sure.

So the question is: who will win the most coveted crown in Twenty 20 cricket? It would sound boring if Chennai wins it; all the 4 teams are very strong. Bangalore have most match winners compared to all, Rajasthan is in excellent form, and of course Mumbai has the Mumbaikar spirit, I cannot predict who will win, but it is gonna be one hell of a fight!!!

Memory Improvement Techniques

Dear Sparshu,

Let me be frank with you, I never had good short term memory. I could never remember dates and events of history books, and also neither good in remembering places river, etc from geography books in school. I was good in Maths and Science as that did not require remembering things, it was more of analytic ability, however as I see now having a good memory is important, not only in school but also in daily life and work life.

Nowadays I rely on technology to remember things, but I saw this wonderful program today on National Geographic about how to improve our memory, and I thought of sharing it with you. I hope this helps you in school days and also in your life. I am too gonna try these techniques from now, and I am pretty positive it would work.

First technique is breaking up things into chunks. For example if you want to remember a 12 digit number like 304832146043 it would be difficult ,as there is a limitation of how much data we can remember in short term memory. Try breaking this into chunks like 3048-3214-6043. Now it would be much easier to remember these 12 digits, as effectively your brain is counting this as 3 chunks or 3 numbers rather than 12. You can try this technique to remember phone numbers, social security numbers, bank account numbers, etc

Second technique is imagination. Let’s say if you want to remember few things in order, let’s say a list of continents in alphabetical order.  So what you want to remember is:  Africa , Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America. Close your eyes and imagine your home, there is an African Lion sitting on the couch in the hall, there is ice cream from Antarctica in the kitchen fridge, there is hot Indian food on the platform, there is a Kagaroo in your playing room, Statue of Liberty in the office room, Rockefeller tower in the guest bedroom and Brazil soccer t-shirt inside the closet of the guest bed room. You can have your own imagination too or use this if you like. Keep your eyes and sink it in, then open your eyes and you would be able to easily recall the list of continents in alphabetical order. It’s about imagination and relating it to daily life.

Third technique is the first alphabet technique. Let’s say you want to remember a list of items to get from Walmart or any other list but not in any particular order, this technique would be very useful. Let’s say for eg you want to remember the list for shopping: Milk, Curd, Cupcakes, Burritos, Nachos, Pink Lemonade, Pretzels, Chipotle, Burger, Salad, Juice and French fries. Seems difficult doesn’t it.  These are 12 items, what you can do it pick first letter of each item: mccbnppcbsjf. Now make any random meaningful or meaningless story with one word for each of these letter. For eg. ‘Mom can cook (in)butter (but)not proper paneer. Can be successful January February.’ It is easier to remember these 2 sentences, it need not be meaningful and then you would be able to recall the list of items easily.

Finally it happens a lot of times when we enter a room to get something, and we forget what we had come for. This happens as the door of the room acts as a kinda reset of short term memory. To avoid this talk to yourself what you are coming in the room to get or to find while you are entering. For eg, say keys keys keys while entering, in that way you would remember what you came in the room for.

As you grow up, you would also have access to technology, use them as well to remember things and make to do lists. It is very important to have a to-do list, you do not forget anything and it is a very important aspect for being successful. However also make sure you keep your brain sharp and memory strong, it would help you a lot in school, work and life. Practice above techniques and you will get better at them and more smart and effective….Love you Bhanju!!!

Mamu

UEFA Champions League 2014-15

I had a complete disconnect from football while in Amdocs. I stayed 3 years without a TV and as I have said before it was intentional so that I could focus on some studies. Now I am living lavishly, independent room in a fully furnished spacious flat. Really enjoying it.

We had not subscribed to sports channel before.  However thanks to Tata Sky upgrade we got one month access to all channels including HD. Coincidently the UEFA Champions League semi-finals are going on. I got a chance to watch the same in HD. Off course I did not watch it Live due to office timings, I saw recap the next day.

The first semi-final was between Barcelona and Bayern Munich. Bayern Munich have had injury problems recently and missing their key players. Barcelona had won the first leg at home 3-0, and that is a big advantage of 3 goals. In the second leg Bayern won at home but also conceded 2 goals. Barcelona going to finals on 5-3 aggregate. One thing to highlight about Barca in second leg was a lot of unselfish play. Players playing for each other, one of the many such instance being Neymar a goal away from hatrick passed a ball when he had a good chance to go for goal in second half.  Bayern had lost their away leg in quarters too against Porto, but thrashed Porto 6-1 at home to reach semis.

The second semis between Juventus and Real Madrid. A very high chance for an El-Classico Champions League finals. Juventus won the first leg at home 2-1. Everyone expecting a thrashing by Ronaldo and company in the second leg at Madrid. However Juventus put on an inspiring performance to hold Madrid 1-1 at home to knock out the defending champions. Juventus have a good team with a mix of experience and youth, and they work well together in defense and have good strikers too. Not to the scale of Messi and CR7, but good enough to give Barcelona a good fight in Berlin….looking forward!!!

Untitled Part 6: Mr. K and the Mathematics of Multiverses

Untitled Part 6

As Mr. K has always said, humans are a very primitive species. However, humans have the grit to achieve the unexpected and the impossible when the situation demands. They have achieved a lot in their history back until 21st century on planet earth. However it seems majority of them got stuck in the rat race, the race and fight for survival. There were technological advancements, but not as many great thinkers and revolutionary creators as there have been in the 19th and 20th century.

There were however some who were the chosen one, who choose to always challenge the normalcy, who had a very curious and pondering mind. They were readers, writers, innovators and outstanding thinkers. They were the one who would salvage the human race.

The multiverse (or meta-universe) is the hypothetical set of infinite or finite possible universes (including the Universe we consistently experience) that together comprise everything that exists: the entirety of space, time, matter, and energy as well as the physical laws and constants that describe them. The various universes within the multiverse are sometimes called parallel universes or "alternate universes". There were lot of theories about the origin of universe, and about multiverse, but still everything was theoretical and to majority of the race hypothetical.

The missing component was the mathematics. If the mathematics could be derived, it would mean tremendous advancement in technology of interstellar space travel to enable creation of worm-hole to travel across galaxies. It could also mean further derivations of equations which would enable humans to traverse across the dimensions of time.  Slowly as humans discover and uncover the potential of more and more dimensions, they would be masters of the universe. 7dimensions was long way away, and not the whole of human race on planet earth would survive the complexities of extreme weather but many would and they would travel across galaxies ,and live with other intelligent species, sometimes in peace and sometimes not.

The most important thing in deriving the mathematics for multiverse is to believe in the concept. Only if you believe that there is another you in another dimension and in another universe would you be able to think of ways and the mathematics required traversing across multiverses. As Mr. K said in Part 5, the ultimate dimension is Maths, and using Maths one can derive more dimensions. It would be difficult, and require a lot of hours, or may be days and months to think it, but once achieved it would change the face of mankind.

Once humans reach certain level of advancements in Mathematics, they would understand more and more about the universe, and about themselves. There is a saying the day a species finds everything about itself it would know everything about the universe. Things like origin of a species, origin of the planets, the origin of the universe if there was one, the physics of dark matter black holes, even the exact functioning of a human brain down to cellular level, humans still have a lot to learn.

They are a species with a lot of potential, the day they would learn to use more and more of their abilities and their thinking power their abilities and brain to maximum potential, more they would become a super species. As there is a saying, there is God in all of us, all we need to do is find it.

Ye Hain India Ka Tyohaar!!

So the world cup got over with Australia winning it comprehensively. Barely a week later IPL starts. This is the 8th edition of IPL. This one is a bit special for me and I am enjoying it too. Having lived without a TV for over 3 years, it’s like a novelty indeed!

Today is third day and third match between Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals. First two matches were good. KKR beating Mumbai Indians at home comfortably, and Chennai winning a last ball thriller against Delhi Daredevils, and that too by just one run. Delhi have been very miserable in last two seasons, wining only 5 matches  total, hopefully they would do better this time.

Today’s match is between Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab. It is Punjab’s thundering batting vs Rajasthan’s potent and plentiful bowling attack. Rajasthan were struggling with the bat, James Faulkner salvaging them with a useful knock at the end. Currently the score is 121 for 5 for Punjab chasing 163 odd; ball seems to be in Royal’s court as of now!!

What else, new job is going well. My onboarding will happen in project coming Monday, things will get busy hence. Today was a fun day in office, we played game in office. A lot of people participated there were 4 teams, with 5 members in each team. Aim was to throw maximum balls in a bin from a distance. Eventually our team won, had fun and got chocolates as prize! Team name was MAVERICKS, guess who suggested it!!

Big news of today was Snapdeal.com buying freecharge startup with $400 million. The founder of freecharge is just 35 years old, has a B.A. in Philosophy and is a MBA dropout. He is from a business family, but if you think his concept was very novel, very useful, and instant hit. Definitely deservers it and he said in an interview today in TOI, he is still going to continue and keep improving and expanding freecharge website.

Life is Good

Today is 3rd April, 2015. It’s around 10 days since I started my new job. Currently I am in the initial training phase. I am into a new domain now, that of investment banking. I will get to learn a lot and am looking forward to it.

I also moved my residence. I was staying in Magarpatta City, which is 2 hours’ drive from my new office. So I have moved closer now in Balewadi, this is just 20 mins drive from office. Here houses are more spacious then Magarpatta City and real estate is also more affordable. I am currently staying in a wonderful 2BHK flat on 3rd floor. The name of society is Mount Corsica, the area around is still developing; and similar towers are coming up. There is not much nearby, but with time, area will develop too.

Currently I have not yet started working in shifts due to training. I have a pretty nice schedule made up. I get up around 8 or so. Listen to songs on TV, my favorite channel is E24, they show songs of 90s and early 2000’s, feel good for the ear, much better than Honey Singh kinda headaches. Moring I prefer soft music, while doing work out, honey singh stuff is welcome.

Speaking of workout I have joined gym again. The name is Oxyfit. I had joined Abs from April 2012 for a year. Had a break for a while, used to do workout at home, even now I used to do at home. Was checking out my office campus and found this gym, I checked it out, it was pretty neat, lot of equipment’s and they are all new as well. I asked for the fees they said they have a 50% discount for couple of days I got the discount thankfully, got a great deal of 10k for 1 year membership, will utilize it well.  Yesterday was first day and I burnt 600 calories… #FeelingProud

What else, I am having the time of my life with my fiancé, the more I know her, the luckier I feel, and more thankful to God too. Little Sparshu is also doing great, had a nice first year birthday celebration party. Going to day care now and doing well.

World Cup just got over last weekend, Australia won it for a record 5th time. They beat India in the semis add New Zealand in the finals. India did well in the World Cup to reach till semis, had an unbeaten run till then, against all the initial expectations it was a commendable effort indeed. Australia was just too strong on the day, we tried our best, but the better team won. Another important happening is Sania Nehwal is now World Number one in badminton, that is a remarkable feet indeed. Badminton is played in a lot number of countries compared to cricket, badminton is also not that popular in India, and to achieve this feat is simply outstanding…Kudos Sania!!

The Importance of Moderation and Self-care

Dear Sparshu,

Currently I am 29 years old I have over 5 and a half years of experience in IT field. Working in IT field in India has lot of perks and good compensation as well. However, with all these facilities also come some health and stress issues. Always remember there are pros and cons of everything in life, you should do whatever you enjoy, and accept your job with its perks and also by accepting its cons. I currently work in a 24 X 6 shift model but I accept it and focus on my work, and enjoy. I don’t have to stretch compared to normal 9 to 5 ‘ers who often end up going 9 to 9. There are many other perks as well like free cab facility. So point is enjoy what you do and never compare yourself to anyone or anyone’s job. Always remember: Look in the mirror, that’s your competition!

This post is for you when you start working, so it may not make sense earlier, but when you reach my present age this would be relevant so I want to give you some important advice based on my own life experiences. Second thing I would like to tell you is the importance of moderation in life. Always have everything in moderation in life what it means is don’t overdo anything you like. You should do everything in life, but in moderation. Also remember always stay away from smoking, alcohol and other such bad things, you are an American citizen residing in US but never forget your Indian culture and values.

Third and final thing is work life balance. You may have graduated from a top university and earning in 6 figure and having a house in Manhattan or similar place, but if you are not doing good health wise it is of no use. You should make sure that you are healthy all the time. Always remember your health comes first. If you are not healthy you are not happy, it is ok if you are not earning 6 figures but it is very much important to be healthy and happy. As you go towards late twenties and early thirties you would be occupied with work, make sure you exercise regularly as soon as you start working full time. Learn some yoga, pranayama and meditation as well. Mental health is equally important as physical health. Your wonderful parents would always be there to guide you and tell you all this, these are just my 2 cents for my dear bhanju. Finally wishing you a fantastic healthy life, lots of love and happiness, and an illustrious career in life! Love you bhanju!

Yours Lovingly,
Mamu

Life & LOTR

I had started watching ‘LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring’ last week, but saw only half an hour, could not complete it. It’s an almost 4 hour epic. I finally got some time, and started again today. Really felt wonderful, now that the Hobbit series is also complete, it makes much more sense and much simpler to understand completely. The cinematography is also superb; the narration of the female voice in the starting with the mystery genre music is fabulous. Middle earth depiction is also incredible, I am not seeing this first time, but the more I see it the more I like it. Also I thought of my good friend Dishitbaba…(like we are friends as Bilbo and Gandalf ;) )who encouraged me to see this more than a year back, I saw the LOTR series first time and simply loved it.

Not blogging much these days, am pretty busy. Lot happening in my life. I changed my job. Now I am in Cognizant, back to Hinjewadi, felt good going there again after Infy stint. Also new challenges to look forward to and new things to learn.

Another wonderful thing is that I got engaged since the last post in this blog. Life is amazing, I am really lucky to have such a wonderful future wife, and I am thankful to God for the same.

I am going to leave Magarpatta this weekend, stayed here for more than 3 years, had lots of fun, and made lots of friends, Seasons Mall and Amanora Mall were like second home. DC was a frequent, almost daily trip too. Amdocs was also a wonderful journey, but change is the only constant in life, and you should keep moving, keep exploring and keep learning. Last post from Roystonea…hasta la vista!!
